I know this is a weird question, but one of my friends brought it up, and it got me thinking.Because dishwashers wash dishes, they call them dishwashers. Why aren't normal washers called clothes washers

In the beginning long before dishwashers were in existence a mechanized device was invented to wash clothes. It was then labeled as a washing machine. There was no need to distingiush it from a washer for dishes which had not yet been invented.
Clothes washers have been around for a long time. Even if it was the wringing type, lots of people had them. And, they were the only kind of washer people had. So, they just called them washers.





Fast forward a few decades. Now we have dish washers, pressure washers, etc. Since the first washer was a clothes washer, it's understood that just ';washer'; refers to a clothes washer. If it's for washing something else, you say what it washes (or how it washes, for a pressure washer) to distinguish it from a clothes washer.
That's exactly what my family called them when I was a kid. As opposed to a pressure washer, faucet washer, egg washer...
Because it's a washing machine. A washer is a metal disk used under a nut and bolt.
