I do my brother's laundry while cleaning his house. He has a top loading, very nice washing machine. The clothes are washed with hot water and Cheer detergent. What could be happening with a clothes washer where the clothes smell foul after they've been washed?
Make sure the inside rim is cleaned out, after a while bacteria can build up in there and cause the smell. If the machine has an automatic fabric softener dispenser down the center of the agitator, bacteria can also build up in there and smell. Check with your brother first, and read the owners manual to see how to take it apart and clean it. I had my husband help me with ours. What could be happening with a clothes washer where the clothes smell foul after they've been washed?
You might want to try using cold water a couple of times instead of hot. Cold water will wash away sweat stains and such, whereas hot water will set them. You might also want to make sure that the machine is draining all the way after the wash cycle. The dirty water might not be draining completely, so you aren't getting full advantage of the rinse cycle. The previous post suggestion of using baking soda will work also!
I have a clue...';You said he has a very nice washing machine';. My bet is it's one of the newer HE types. I bought one of those expensive, newfangled, energy efficient (water stingy) Whirlpool sets. It was a nightmare. Moldy smelling , lint covered streaked up, wrinkled up clothes that you couldn't hang dry because it took the dryer to get all the lint off. Luckily, Lowes took them back. I did some research before I picked new ones. I got a G.E. Profile top load washer and dryer set.It was hundreds of dollars cheaper and it has almost as much load capacity as the other ones but it has an agitator and uses plenty of water. As someone stated about their washer without an agitator holding a king size comforter, mine does also. What I learned is, that it takes WATER to get your clothes clean! What you save on water on the others, you spend on higher priced high efficiency detergents anyway. I also learned that I like agitators. If you are considering getting a front loader or any of those water miser types, I suggest you put '; moldy smell in front load washers'; into your search engine. I love my washer and dryer. I'm eternally grateful to Lowes for bailing me out of this one. I can't imagine having to keep that set. I think I would have sold it in a yard sale. If it ever gets to where those HE sets are all you can buy, I'll have mine repaired till the day I die.
You left them in the machine too long.
He has hard water or well water at his house
Adding some baking soda to the load will kill odors
Sounds like you may have left them in the washer too long.
Try making smaller loads and give them an extra rinse with 1 cup vinegar. Hot water is not always needed. If he has ';work clothes'; wash them separately.
It is possible that the water is not draining completely from the washer. Ideally it should be fixed, but in the meantime use a generous cup of baking soda (make sure it has dissolved) in the wash water. It is a natural safe bleach and will freshen up the wash as well as the water. It works real well for towels and face %26amp; wash cloths that sometimes hold odours even after washing them.
Can you be my sister too?
