Why do my clothes feel all rough and boardlike after i wash them?

whenever i wash and dry a shirt or something, it always feels really... i don't know how to explain it... crunchy? my clothes get all hard and uncomfortable.

i use dryer sheets and everything, aahhh! does anyone know how i can make them feel soft? Why do my clothes feel all rough and boardlike after i wash them?
it sounds like not all the soap/detergent is being rinsed out. Try using less. I have never used the recommended amount of detergent, I always use less unless it's the ultra concetrated stuff. and I've been doing laundry for 35 yearsWhy do my clothes feel all rough and boardlike after i wash them?
Hard water will leave your clothes feeling very rough. After we dry clothing on the line, the pants are sometimes so stiff we joke that they can walk back to the closet. Usually putting them in the dryer on ';air dry'; for ten minutes or so softens them.

If using softener and the dryer is not leaving the clothing soft, you may have some other problem.

I'd try rinsing them a second time, and use less detergent. It could be that your washer isn't getting all the soap out, and that would affect how well the fabric softener works. We had this problem when the washer malfunctioned, and was not agitating the rinse cycle, so the clothing just remained bunched up at the bottom, and water ran in and drained out without getting the soap residue out.

If making sure the soap is rinsed out does not remedy the problem, contact the local extension office (look in the phone book under county offices for your county or state. The office may be called ';home extension agent'; or ';agricultural extension agent.'; It may even be under the supervision of a local state university. Tell them the problem you are having, and ask for advice there. They know the local water, and may be able to suggest a solution. You may need to replace the washer.

Good luck, and I hope the second rinse fixes the problem. I love the smell and feel of cotton sheets dried in the wind on a cold day.
try fabric softener or try using a different dryer to see if that's the problem
